The Swiss Contribution to Scientific Ocean Drilling: Past, Present & Future

Report of the SwissSed-COL Symposiums of 26th of February 2002, Fribourg

Flavio Anselmetti and Judith A. McKenzie,
Geological Institute, ETH Zürich

After 17 years of the Ocean Drilling Program (ODP), which succeeded the Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP), a new epoch in scientific ocean drilling will begin in late 2003 with a new multiplatform drilling program, the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP). The technical capabilities and the width of scientific themes that can be addressed with IODP will be expanded dramatically. What will be the future role of the Swiss earth science community within this expanded international program? To address this question, the SwissSed group and the Commission for Oceanography and Limnology (COL) combined their annual symposiums on Saturday, 26th February in Fribourg to a look at the past, present and future activities of Swiss earth scientists in scientific ocean drilling.
