The Commission for Oceanography and Limnology (COL) of the Swiss Academy of Sciences has three main goals:

PROMOTE study and research opportunities and international contacts for Swiss students and scientists.

SUPPORT students who would like to enroll in oceanographic and limnological courses.

ADVERTISE marine and lake research through its website and symposia.

COL also serves as the Scientific Committee of Oceanic Research SCOR and its members are represented in international oceanographic bodies of experts.

COL is facilitating access to marine station for Swiss scholars.

Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR)
SCOR is the leading non-governmental organisation promoting international cooperation in the ocean sciences. The Committee activities cover all areas of ocean sciences, with special foci on ocean carbon and global change issues.

International Commission for the Scientific Exploration of the Mediterranean Sea (CIESM)
Switzerland has an active participation in the commission that provides to Swiss scholars working in the Mediterranean realm with an ideal forum to interact with other scientists coming from diverse fields and cultures but all united by a common interest in the Mediterranean. The CIESM International Congress will take place in Istambul this coming April.

Transatlantic21
Using solar power only the Swiss catamaran "sun21" is undertaking the first motorized crossing of the Atlantic with solar power to promote the great potential of this technology for ocean navigation. Prof. David Senn, a former COL member, is part of the crew.
